Bookmakers assign Harry Kane a 70 percent probability of winning the 2026 Ballon d'Or, making him the clear market favorite. This stands in contrast to data from Avisia, a French artificial intelligence firm, which predicts Lamine Yamal has the highest likelihood of winning at 23 percent. The winner of football's most prestigious individual honor will be announced at a ceremony in London within 24 hours.
The 2026 award recognizes the best player of the 2025-26 season. The race has narrowed to a three-way contest between Kane, Yamal, and Kylian Mbappe. Yamal and Mbappe have publicly campaigned for the award. Kane has remained quieter in his promotion of his own case.
Avisia ranked Kane second with a 21 percent probability. Mbappe and Rodri, the 2024 winner, tied for third at 19 percent each. Lionel Messi rounded out the top five with an 18 percent chance to claim a record-extending ninth title. Avisia stated that its model correctly identified the top five finishers for the 2025 award, which was won by Ousmane Dembele.
Player opinions diverge sharply on the likely outcome. Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone endorsed Messi, noting that the Argentine played at a high level after the World Cup despite his age. Former Italy international Marco Materazzi also backed the 38-year-old, stating he is in a different league. Jude Bellingham, who is also shortlisted, supported Kane, citing his hard work and honesty. Anthony Gordon, who plays alongside Yamal at Barcelona, described his teammate as being on another level. Aurelien Tchouameni, a teammate of Mbappe at Real Madrid, called the Frenchman's season incredible.
Individual statistics favor Mbappe, who leads La Liga with 25 goals and the Champions League with 15. He also won the Golden Boot at the 2026 World Cup and set a record for the most World Cup goals with 12. Kane scored 73 goals last season, the highest total by any player since Messi's 82 in 2011-12. However, neither Mbappe nor Kane won a major trophy with their clubs or countries during the period.
Yamal distinguishes himself by winning the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona. His personal statistics were affected by injury. Historical data indicates that winning a major tournament is often a prerequisite for the award. Only four of the last 19 winners did not lift a Champions League, World Cup, European Championship, or Copa America title during their winning year.
Yamal is bidding to become the youngest winner in the award's history. He would surpass Brazilian Ronaldo, who was 21 when he won the prize in 1997. The ceremony is scheduled to take place at the London Palladium.
