The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 10-1 on Monday night at Tropicana Field. The victory gives Milwaukee a 3-0 lead in the World Series. One more win secures the franchise's first championship.
The game turned on an eighth-run fifth inning that set a postseason record. Milwaukee scored eight runs with two outs. This marked the first time in World Series history a team recorded eight two-out runs in a single frame.
Jackson Chourio opened the rally with a one-out single. He stole second base with two outs. Christian Yelich followed with a walk. William Contreras hit an infield single to load the bases. Third baseman Junior Caminero threw out the force play, but a replay review overturned the call.
Brice Turang broke the game open. He hit a liner that shortstop Taylor Walls could not handle. The ball bounced off his glove and rolled into shallow center field for a two-run single. Mitchell, Pratt, and Frelick added runs to make the score 8-0.
Robert Gasser anchored the Milwaukee pitching staff. The rookie left-hander allowed one hit through six innings. He faced the minimum 18 batters. He became the first starter to achieve this in a World Series game since Curt Schilling in 2001.
Gasser also became the first left-handed pitcher to face the minimum in the sixth inning of a World Series game since Sandy Koufax in 1965. He allowed one run on 15 innings over three postseason starts. He has pitched only on the road in this series.
Tampa Bay starter Freddy Peralta gave up five runs and seven hits in 4.2 innings. Manager Kevin Cash said the pitcher felt good but struggled with command. The Rays have never won a World Series in 29 seasons.
The Brewers have won eight consecutive postseason games. This ties the record for a single postseason. Chourio finished 4 for 5 with a double. He became the second-youngest player with four hits and a stolen base in a World Series game, behind Ty Cobb in 1908.
Game 4 is scheduled for Tuesday night at Tropicana Field. Tampa Bay announced Griffin Jax as its starter. Milwaukee has not named a pitcher. The Rays need to win all remaining games to avoid elimination.
The Brewers led the majors with 103 wins in the regular season. They swept the Dodgers in the National League Championship Series. A win on Tuesday would make them the first team to sweep an LCS and the World Series since the 1976 Cincinnati Reds.
